The Western District offers continuing legal education on topics of interest to lawyers practicing in Federal Court. Our flagship program, the Hillman Trial Skills Workshop, is offered annually during the month of January at the Western District Courthouse in Grand Rapids. The Bankruptcy section of the Western District also sponsors an annual seminar. Shorter programs are also offered throughout the year during the lunch hour. Criminal Law Seminars
Your local FBA chapter presents seminars on criminal law. The seminars are directed at Assistant US Attorneys, CJA panel attorneys, and attorneys from the Federal Defender's Office. Check the calendar for upcoming criminal law seminars.
Civil Law Seminars
Your local FBA chapter offers continuing education opportunities on topics of interest to attorneys who practice civil litigation. Updates on court rule changes, addresses by the magistrate judges and Article III judges, and presentations regarding trial practice from the most experienced and well respected practioners are just a few of the topics that have been presented. Bench Bar Conference
Held approximately every three years, the Bench-Bar Conference is a cooperative effort between the judges for the Eastern and Western Districts of Michigan and the Federal Bar Assocation Chapters from those districts. The Bench-Bar Conference offers an opportunity for judges and lawyers to interact and exchange ideas on improving the administration of justice throughout Michigan. The last Bench-Bar Conference was held in the Fall of 2008 in Northern Michigan. The Western District FBA plans and sponsors a series of monthly presentations on issues of interest to the local bar. The sessions run from noon to approximately 1:30 P.M. and are held in the jury assembly room on the 2nd floor of the Federal Court building at 110 Michigan Street SW in Grand Rapids. The cost is $10.00 and includes a sandwich lunch.
Recent topics have included a demonstration by Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals Judge David W. McKeague of the evidence cart purchased jointly by the Western District Court and the FBA, a panel presentation on prisoner civil rights litigation, and a primer on effective advocacy by 6th Circuit Court of Appeals Judge Jeffrey S. Sutton.
